Monroe, NC is the town seat for Union County. One of its claims to fame is that it's the birthplace of the Belk brothers and is the location of the first Belk's Department Store. Monroe has a gorgeous historic district with bungalows and Victorian homes - many which have been lovingly restored. These homes have much better prices than you'll find in some of the areas close to downtown Charlotte and are still within commuting distance. Monroe now has several wineries (try Treehouse Vineyards for outdoor entertainment while drinking their wonderful wine. You can even spend the night in a luxury treehouse!). Enjoy a craft beer at Southern Range Brewery. The historic Center Theater has been reopened for events and a new science museum will open soon. Monroe also is the hub for three high schools: Monroe High School, Central Academy of Art and Union County Early College. Monroe is quickly becoming the place to be!
